FINE WINES IN ALL ITS SHADES
If the specialists are usually in agreement in recognizing the finest wines, this classification remains very subjective …… So what are the characteristics that a cuvée must possess in order to enter the classifications of fine wines?
FINE WINES: TERRITORY AND SAVOIR FAIRE ...
Depending on the color (red, rosé, white or gray), the qualities required for fine wines are obviously not the same. For a fine red wine, we can enjoy a strong wine on the palate, while a fine white wine will be appreciated for its lightness. However, there are some objective data that allow us to recognize and classify the finest wine bottles.
Very often fine wines are produced in regions recognized for their climate favorable to the cultivation of vineyards, or specialized in the production of high quality wines. The territory is therefore a first criterion to be taken into consideration. The fine wines are also distinguished by the grape variety that was mainly used for their production: for example, gamay, grenache or syrah.
The finest wines are finally recognizable from their vintage. A common mistake is to believe that the older a wine, the better. In fact, a Beaujolais wine shows more of its qualities when it's new (or not too old), while a Burgundy wine will benefit, more often than not, from spending some time in the cellar. Some vintages are also noteworthy for the particularly favorable climatic conditions for the production of fine wines: these are often years of drought, such as 1976, 2003 or 2013.
