Biserno estate
The Biserno estate is located in western Tuscany in the coastal area of the upper Maremma. The Biserno estate is located in the hills of Bibbona. Originally extraneous to wine production, it borders on the DOC Bolgheri. The vineyards of Bibbona and Bolgheri meet near the Tenuta di Biserno, resulting "very similar to Saint Emilion and Pomerol", as noted by Lodovico Antinori.
Lodovico learned of this strip of land from Dante Scanavino, his then General Manager at Ornellaia. He supervised the land and was surprised by its resemblance to the Masseto terroir. But, beyond this, here Lodovico identified other elements of the soil that gave him the immediate inspiration to plant Cabernet Franc. His "bet" was that this variety would give excellent results in that terroir.
Another feature that struck him was a breathtaking panorama of the property, with views ranging from the Tyrrhenian Sea to Corsica. As per the consolidated tradition of the nearby Bolgheri DOC, he decided to plant only Bordeaux vines with one big difference: the use of a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc, followed by Merlot.
There is also a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and a relatively high proportion of Petit Verdot, an almost forgotten grape variety in Bordeaux, which has surprised many wine professionals with the way it has adapted so well to these sun-drenched hills.
The forty hectares of the Biserno estate are made up of a complex soil which is made up of silt, alluvial sand and, in some areas, also a high percentage of clay, combined with the Bolgheri conglomerate (geological name of the native soil of the Bolgheri-Bibbona area). The Bolgherese Conglomerate is also rich in minerals, recognizable when tasting the wines.
