Michael Satta
An important difference between Michele Satta and other big names like Ornellaia, Sassicaia or Grattamacco is that the determined and very likeable winemaker from Bolgheri runs the oldest cellar owned by a winegrower. Satta founded his winery in Castagneto Carducci at a time when viticulture in the Tuscan region was in its infancy and great successes were yet to come.
The road taken by the innovative winemaker was new in Bolgheri at the time. Thus he – supported by his wife Lucy from the beginning in his decisions – not only concentrated on the international varieties Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah, but also on the noble Sangiovese grape variety. The first harvest in 1990 showed how great their potential was. However, this fascinating grape variety is not yet widespread in the still quite young growing area.
Having purchased the land, bought the first vineyards in 1988, planted the first plants and set up a functional cellar, Michele Satta soon began to expand and enrich his wine kingdom, initially still very small. In 1991 the Castagni, Poderini, La Torre, Vignanuova and Costa di Giulia vineyards were added, as well as another ten hectares.
All vineyards are managed by a team with a lot of personal dedication. They look more like a lovingly tended suburban garden than an agricultural area. Since the expansion, the wines from the bottle battery, which is now large with nine products, have steadily improved in quality.
All the grape varieties are vinified and matured separately in the cellar to then be used later for wines such as the often award-winning Bolgheri Rosso Piattoia and composed in equal measure of Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese.
