Domain of Pingus
Dominio de Pingus is a small "cult" domaine in the Ribera del Duero region of Spain, founded by the Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck in 1995. He uses 100% Tempranillo (aka Tinto Fino) from very old vines, which have never been treated with pesticides.
The estate's flagship wine, called “Pingus”, was first released in 1995. Only 325 cases were produced that year, but the wine immediately received top marks from various wine critics. In 2000, the Dominio de Pingus switched to biodynamic agriculture, a logical decision given that the vineyards were already organically grown.
The average annual production of "Pingus" now reaches around 500 cases, but in scarce years, no "Pingus" will be produced. The "Pingus" is one of the most expensive wines in Spain and highly sought after. The 2004 and 2012 vintages both received the perfect score (100 points) from Robert Parker and will cost you 800 euros or more!
The second wine produced at the domaine is called “Flor de Pingus” and is available on the wine market for less than € 100. Its annual production is 4000 cases and this wine is also made with 100% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) grapes, also grown in a biodynamic way.
A very rare wine is called "Amelia" a single barrel cuvée and not produced in every vintage. Although the price is lower than the "Pingus" itself, only 25-30 cases are produced from vines over 100 years old from a parcel. The first release of “Amelia” was in 2003 and only 5 vintages have been released so far.
The latest wine produced is the “PSI”, which is a project to help local growers and to save the old Tempranillo vines planted throughout the region. The wine is vinified by Peter Sisseck and the first vintage was 2007. The production of this wine is well over 10.000 cases.
