Philipponnat
Phillipponnat, universally recognized as one of the most important Champagne houses, was founded in 1522 in Mareuil-sur-Ay. The maison had the privilege of being the supplier of the King of France, Louis XIV, and over the centuries it has maintained a leading role internationally.
The village of Mareuil, practically a single road dotted with small winemakers, is located in the center of the Champagne region, at the meeting point of the three main areas that divide the region: the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs.
Philipponnat owns 20 hectares of vineyards located not only in Mareuil, but also in the municipalities of Ay, Mutigny and Avenay, all of which are beautifully south-facing. The Clos des Goisses it is the most notable vineyard: 5,5 hectares of vines that lend themselves so well to producing a year even in less favorable years.
The word "goisses" is the feminine of "gois", which means "very difficult to work", in fact the slope ranging from 30 ° to 45 ° is such that it is impossible to use agricultural machinery, therefore all the work done in the "clos ”Is handmade, as in past centuries.
From this small vineyard a historic label of the house was born which has become very famous in Italy, also because it was the favorite of Gianni Agnelli. Pierre Philipponnat bought this wonderful vineyard in 1935 from the Visconti d'Ay family and today it is considered a priceless treasure.
Today, Charles Philipponnat, heir to this glorious family tradition, continues the work of his predecessors with great passion and competence to keep the name and prestige of the house high.
The unique and inimitable style of the house is the result of centuries-old know-how, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, which includes careful and scrupulous management of the vineyards, linked to a profound environmental sensitivity, and a vast heritage of reserve wines matured in wood with the solera method. This is how world-famous Philipponnat champagnes were created, among the best performers of their kind.
