John Montisci
The Giovanni Montisci winery is based in Mamoiada, in the heart of Barbagia, about 600 meters above sea level, a strong and hard region, swept by the Mistral wind and parched by the sun. Giovanni Montisci, a former mechanic, about twenty years ago inherits from his mother-in-law 2 hectares of a vineyard in total abandonment and decides to change his life and start a new business: winegrower and producer of a wine in which you can feel all the typicality of the soil of the Barbagia.
The road is long and hard, but Giovanni does not give up, with courage and perseverance he restores the old plants of Canonau, keeping some plants that are 80 years old and replanting other younger ones; for 15 years he frequented two winemaker friends and their cellars to learn all the secrets of the art of producing wine.
After a few years of selling bulk wine locally, in 2004 Giovanni bottles his first 700 bottles, and calls his wine "Barrosu", which in the Barbagia dialect means "bold", just as his friends told him when they tasted his wine: the bold "Barrosu" in 2005 obtained the DOC. Giovanni's "creed" is simple: no chemicals in the vineyard, only native yeasts, no sulfur dioxide, do not filter and wait for the wine itself to be ready for bottling.
Thus Giovanni Montisci obtains organic certification. The production today is about 6 thousand bottles a year, all numbered, 4,5 thousand of Barrosu, one thousand of Barrosu Riserva and one thousand of Rosé. Barrosu di Giovanni has crossed the borders of Sardinia and has obtained multiple awards in Italy and abroad
