Engraved Marquesses of Rocchetta Tenuta San Guido
Engraved Marquesses of Rocchetta Tenuta San Guido. In 1965, the late Mario (Marchesi Incisa della Rochetta) planted two new vineyards with Cabernet Sauvigon and Cabernet Franc near the original vineyard. This was the beginning of the "new" Sassicaia and the first release in 1968 was already well received. However, the wine became world famous in 1978 when a blind tasting contest was organized by Decanter magazine and a bottle of Sassicaia won over many famous Cabernet Sauvignon producers from around the world.
ESTATE SAN GUIDO of the Marquises Incisa della Rocchetta
Sassicaia and San Guido are names known to many and for different reasons. The palace of San Guido and the long double line of cypresses on the sides of the road that connect it to the village of Bolgheri owe their fame to the well-known verses of Giusuè Carducci. San Guido and the vast estate bearing this name entered the Incisa della Rocchetta possessions on October 18, 1930. Its territory extends from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the hills behind Castiglioncello, 396 meters high. The beauty of its landscape is well known: its typical landscape, wild and sweet, enjoys an incredible microclimate. Two thirds of the area is wooded, the rest is divided between the training center and the breeding of thoroughbred horses of the Dormello-Olgiata breed, the Bolgheri Oasis and the cultivated land. And it is precisely the latter that constitute, at least in part, the famous "sassicaie" brilliantly identified by Mario Incisa as the ideal home for the vineyards planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and in part used for extensive and traditional cultivation. The estate slopes towards the sea (to the west) with gentle hills, up to the beautiful coast of dunes and Mediterranean scrub. The San Guido estate is today a modern, directly managed farm, on the edge of a wildlife and environmental oasis (the Bolgheri Oasis), the first in Italy to be internationally recognized.

Since Sassicaia was the first Italian wine to experiment with Bordeaux-style winemaking, it can be considered the first “Super Tuscan”. For this reason the wine has been classified only as Vino da Tavola, but since 2013 it has become the only wine of a single estate in Italy that has received its own DOC (Bolgheri Sassicaia). The vinification of Sassicaia takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature for about two weeks. The wine is then aged in 25% new oak barrels from France for 24 months. The production of Sassicaia is around 180.000 bottles per year. There is also a second wine produced “Guidalberto” (cabernet sauvignon & merlot), which was launched in 2000 and recently “La Diffese” was introduced. “La Diffese” has some Sangiovese in the blend and is partially aged in American oak. In addition, the company also produces, in association with Jacopo Poli a Grappa "From Vinacce Di Sassicaia". The winery has many famous fans. For example, Jay-Z and Beyonce have visited the cellar and rumor has it that they always want to have two bottles in their dressing room. David and Victoria Beckham also celebrated their wedding anniversary with a case of Sassicaia and Rihanna was seen leaving a restaurant with a bottle of Sassicaia in hand. The great vintages of Sassicaia are: 1985 (considered a legend!), 1988, 1990, 1997, 1998, 2001, and in general all the wines from the 2006 vintage onwards.
