Domaine Leflaive
The Domaine Leflaive based in Puligny-Montrachet, now has 24 hectares of vineyards with plots in the legendary Grand cru Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet. The bottles produced annually are about 120.000. The origins of the vineyards of the Domaine date back to the Gallo-Roman era with the birth of the village of Puligny (about 2000 years ago).
The turning point in the company was in 1920: Joseph Leflaive, following a strong crisis, embarked on a program of replanting, extending and enhancing the company's vineyards, managing to select new rootstocks that best suited the different crus of the Domaine. Thus began the marketing of the wines of Domaine Leflaive with their own label and identity, which was extremely rare for the time.
The members of the family have led the company until today and Anne-Claude Leflaive, taking over the management of the Domaine in 1990, invests in the search for the absolute quality of the wines produced to consolidate its leadership in the bourguignon panorama.
In 1997 Anne-Claude decided to use the criteria of biodynamics to cultivate the vineyards of the Domaine even more rigorously. The vinification and aging follow the strictest respect for the Bourguignonne tradition: long and natural fermentations in the classic 228-liter barrels, followed by frequent bâtonnage until the beginning of winter. In spring the malolactic fermentation takes place, followed by two or three rackings before putting the wine in stainless steel, where it will remain for about six months.
The only concessions to progress are the use of the pneumatic press and the air conditioning of the cellars, where the wine rests for a couple of years before being put on the market.
The Domaine Leflaive purchased approximately 2004 hectares in 9, planted entirely with Chardonnay, in the Mâcon-Verzé appellation. From the first vintage they were grown biodynamically and followed with the same care and rigor as the Puligny-Montrachet vineyards.
The grapes, rigorously harvested by hand after selection, are pressed in the Verzé cellar and then the must is brought to Puligny, where fermentation and élevage take place.
The current regisseur of the company is Brice de La Morandiere.
